# Getting the Best Results From Your Reprocessing Program – With Minimal Effort

Published by [Lars Thording](https://blog.innovative-health.com/blog/author/lars-thording) on October 20th, 2026

Hospital leaders have spent years recognizing the financial and environmental value of single-use device reprocessing. Yet many programs still operate reactively, relying on collection efforts and vendor support rather than using data to drive continuous improvement.

The reality is that successful reprocessing programs do not happen by accident. They are actively managed, measured, and optimized as technologies evolve.

The release of Innovative Health's industry-first reprocessing benchmark report offers one of the clearest views yet into how technology adoption and device utilization affect reprocessing performance. Drawing on extensive data from cardiology and electrophysiology programs, the report reveals patterns that can help hospitals increase savings while requiring surprisingly little additional effort.

**Technology Changes Faster Than Most Programs**

One of the strongest messages from the benchmark report is that medical technology does not evolve at a consistent pace. Some devices remain in widespread use for many years, creating stable opportunities for reprocessing. Others experience explosive adoption immediately after launch.

In one example, utilization of a newly introduced device increased more than **1,230% in only three months**. By contrast, other technologies required years before becoming common across healthcare organizations. Even more striking are the large-scale technology shifts occurring within electrophysiology. During one 12-month period, one technology category expanded five-fold while the technology it replaced declined by **77%**.

For hospital leaders, these transitions matter because every technology shift changes the mix of devices entering the reprocessing program. A rapidly adopted product without FDA clearance for reprocessing can temporarily reduce savings substantially until approvals and collection processes catch up. In short: *Technology strategy and reprocessing strategy can no longer be managed independently.*

**Reprocessing Programs Naturally Grow—If They Are Managed**

The benchmark report also demonstrates that mature reprocessing programs are not static. Across hospitals with active reprocessing programs, programs expanded an average of **28% annually**.

Growth occurred through two primary mechanisms:

- Adding additional device categories into the program.
- Increasing participation within device categories already being reprocessed.

This finding is important because many hospitals assume their programs have reached maturity after implementing the initial collection process. In reality, the strongest-performing organizations continue expanding year after year.

The report also identified enormous variation between average-performing hospitals and those in the 90th percentile, suggesting that many organizations leave significant savings unrealized despite having an established reprocessing program.

**Not Every Device Deserves Equal Attention**

One of the report's most actionable findings is that reprocessing value is highly concentrated. Nearly **two-thirds of all reprocessed devices originate from only ten product families.** Similarly, approximately **85% of all reprocessed electrophysiology devices come from technologies that have remained market leaders for seven years or longer**, representing roughly **76% of total program value.**

These findings suggest that many hospitals spread their operational attention too evenly across every eligible device. Instead, organizations can achieve better financial results by concentrating on the relatively small number of high-volume, high-value device categories that generate most program savings.

In addition, the report found that devices with very short or very long market lifecycles often represent lower-cost products, while devices remaining in the market for approximately seven to nine years frequently represent the highest-value reprocessing opportunities. Understanding where value is concentrated allows hospitals to prioritize effort where it produces the greatest return.

**Collection and Buy-Back Compliance May Be the Biggest Opportunity**

Many organizations focus heavily on negotiating pricing with their reprocessing partner. However, pricing has little impact if eligible devices never reach the collection bin or if the buyer doesn’t prioritize reprocessed devices over new.

For high-value device categories, improving collection compliance and buy-back participation often produces greater financial gains than changing contract terms. Small improvements in staff compliance can translate directly into substantial annual savings because every missed device represents lost value that cannot be recovered later.

This makes frontline education, standardized collection workflows, and routine compliance monitoring some of the highest-return investments a hospital can make.

**Standardization Supports Financial Performance**

Variation in physician preference is often discussed from a supply chain perspective, but it also affects reprocessing performance. When hospitals utilize a broad mix of comparable technologies, collection and reprocessing volumes become fragmented across multiple device categories.

Greater standardization around clinically appropriate technologies allows hospitals to concentrate purchasing, simplify workflows, and maximize utilization of FDA-cleared reprocessed devices. As new technologies enter the market, hospitals should evaluate not only clinical performance but also the downstream impact on their reprocessing program.

Early adoption of a technology without established reprocessing pathways may temporarily reduce savings substantially until regulatory clearances become available. Understanding this tradeoff allows health systems to make more informed technology decisions.

**Treat Reprocessing Like Any Other Performance Improvement Program**

Perhaps the most important lesson from the benchmark report is that reprocessing should not operate as a passive service. The highest-performing organizations actively manage growth, establish measurable objectives, and continuously evaluate performance.

Hospital leaders should consider:

- Setting annual program growth targets of at least 28%, consistent with benchmark performance. And asking the reprocessor to come up with a plan that achieves this.
- Concentrating collection efforts on high-volume, high-value device families.
- Monitoring collection and buy-back compliance in priority categories.
- Working with clinical leaders to standardize technology use where clinically appropriate.
- Evaluating new technology introductions for their potential impact on reprocessing savings.
- Preparing to shift device utilization between brands to ensure reprocessing cost savings are protected while the reprocessor cathes up with FDA clearances.
- Collaborating with reprocessing partners to expand eligible device categories as FDA clearances become available.

**A Small Amount of Management Can Produce Outsized Results**

The benchmark report reinforces a simple but important conclusion: The greatest opportunity in reprocessing is often not renegotiating contracts or implementing entirely new programs. It is managing existing programs more intentionally.

Hospitals that understand technology adoption patterns, focus attention on the highest-value devices, improve collection and buy-back compliance, and continuously expand program participation can generate significantly greater financial returns with relatively modest operational effort.

As healthcare organizations continue searching for sustainable cost reductions that do not compromise patient care, data-driven management of single-use device reprocessing represents one of the clearest opportunities to improve financial performance while supporting environmental stewardship and operational efficiency.
